News flash! It seems only checking for glibc-2.1 is needed.
According to another email I received the code I contributed will work
on any glibc-2.1, regardless of kernel support for pty98. Maybe
someone who has non-pty98 system can check that my patch is OK?

Yes, I just checked the code. If it cannot open /dev/ptmx it falls
back
back to the old /dev/ptyXY stuff.
