I've been toying with proposing that Java be similarly
integrated
into Emacs, i.e., that Emacs include a vm and have Lisp functions
for instantiating Java classes and invoking Java methods. In other
words, the proposal is to use Java as a transparent extension to Emacs Lisp.
All kinds of good things would flow from this, including
from a purely parochial point of view the ability to integrate
platform-independent,
Java-based GUIs and development tools into the JDE without absorbing a
performance hit. I'm not sure that RMS would go
for this because Java is not freeware. Or perhaps he would if
the integrated vm were guava, the GNU vm.
Richard, do you want to comment?
I think it would be great to have a vm inside emacs, but why ask rms?
Maybe better ask the xemacs people?
I dont know how such a thing could work, because I dont know enough
about lisp, but _if_ you can manage to get it work, it would be great.
Maybe it also helps to integrate xemacs in some ide's (eg netbeans),
if we can call lisp func. from java...
