my suspicion is that it's frame creation and destruction - VM is the
almost the only time I use multiple frames
(I used to have ediff use multiple frames, but once I started making
ediff use a single frame when this became a problem, I found I
preferred it)
at one point when things were really unstable I did the same for VM
(prevented multiple frames), and never had a crash - I haven't tried
that in a while, since I do prefer having VM use multiple frames
