I found M-* to be defined in etags.el:
;;;###autoload (define-key esc-map "*" 'pop-tag-mark)
while
(define-key global-map "\M-." 'find-tag)
and others are to be found in keydefs.el.
All this for -r r21-4-5-rc1.
M-. is documented in man/xemacs/programs.texi
while M-* is not.
