saving customizations became _really_ slow

Custom has _always_ been slow at saving for me, since at least the 20.5 beta series that became 21.0, and probably in 20.4 although I don't really remember. I have not noticed any change in speed up to a recent (10 days old? box not online right now) CVS checkout.
