assert_failed: glyphs.c:3810: !UNBOUNDP (image_instance)

In XEmacs 21.2 (beta35) "Nike" [Lucid] (i686-pc-linux) of Sun Oct 1 2000 on swoon.home configured using `configure --prefix=/home/swoon --with-gcc --with-pop' Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug and the precise symptoms of the bug: I'm running XEmacs 21.2.b35 (CVS checkout as of GMT-17:26-Oct-01-2000) and Gnus 5.8.7 as distributed in the gnus-1.50 XEmacs package. I created a corrupt JPEG file, uuencoded it, and sent it to myself as mail. When I attempt to read the message with Gnus and Gnus tries to auto-display the image, XEmacs aborts with: Fatal error: assertion failed, file /home/swoon/build/xemacs-21.2/src/src/glyphs.c, line 3810, !UNBOUNDP (image_instance) XEmacs-21.2-b31 running the same version of Gnus displaying the same mail message simply displays the warning: (1) (jpeg/info) Corrupt JPEG data: 21 extraneous bytes before marker 0x6d in the *Warnings-Show* buffer. The Gnus *Article* buffer appears fine except for the missing JPEG image. When I attempt to view the corrupt image file in XEmacs 21.2-b35 by calling (image-decode-jpeg (point-min) (point-max)) XEmacs reports a problem with the image and continues to run. I suspect XEmacs has changed the way a corrupt-image is reported in a way that Gnus is not expecting.
