defcustom and :version property?

Hi, While looking at some GNU Emacs code I see that in defcustom the keyword:version is used. Doc string: VALUE should be a string specifying that the variable was first introduced, or its default value was changed, in Emacs version VERSION. We have it too in some places and it seems like the version number of GNU Emacs is used. Is that on purpose or shouldn't we use our version number?
