No, it's _not_ _kernel_ stupidity. It's _all_ glibc stuff. glibc
distributes its own set of kernel headers, because they don't trust Linus
to know what's in the kernel, I guess.
Well, glibc is another can of worms entirely... equally as bad. See some
of the comments in gpmevent.c as to why I hate certain parts of the linux
kernel. :) I really hate the debian libc6 packages - if you try to use
anything but their kernel packages, you are screwed.

Fine by me. OK, I resign as Release Manager effective immediately -- I'm
going to be too busy "avoiding Linux" for the next few weeks. :-)
It takes time to get over any addiction, but if you take the time to do it,
your life will drastically improve. :)
