If you suffer from hand problems, why didn't you adopt Delete for
yourself instead of Ctrl-D long ago? Do you use cursor keys or
Ctrl-[FBPN]? If not, consider switching to save your hands from Emacs
Pinky.
You could just adopt the Steve style and simply use the BackSpace key
for all character deletions. This definitely is a reasonable way to
use the keyboard, but it requires switching your direction of thinking
sometimes.
