this is sort of moot now, but I'd like to point out that
AC_REQUIRE(2.59) is not a solution, it is the problem. What really
forced our hand was a major friendly vendor devoting resources to
updating configure.in because they were unwilling to put up with 2.13
any longer.
Given that autoconf 2.5x is last-century technology, does that mean
we'll have to wait until 2100 for an Autoconf 3.0 version of
configure?:-) That's the problem that I see ... that our configure
script will get horribly crufty and bitrotted again precisely because
we've got XEmacs-specific code all over the place.
None of this means that we shouldn't go ahead with the patch, because
AFAICT it doesn't actually make those problems more likely.
