Not really. From the user point of view, most XEmacs users use
platform input methods (eg, compose keys, AltGr, etc) for non-ASCII
characters. Asian users typically have many options (eg, for Japanese
I use either Canna or Anthy), and Japanese Quail doesn't work at all
because it uses features that were introduced into GNU Emacs
specifically to support advanced features in Japanese Quail.
I only ever use Quail for the occasional accented character in
European names, so I don't know much about it. Maybe Aidan knows a
lot more, though.
I use Quail all the time, because it means I don’t have to learn how my
platform does multilingual input (I don’t have to install the language
support files on Win32, I can rely on phonetic layouts for Cyrillic and
Greek and Arabic there, on X11 and on OS X) for scripts that I only use
occasionally. I typically copy and paste from XEmacs to other apps, when I’m
not directly using the text in IRC, email or in HTML source.
I’ve been doing occasional work with Quail and XEmacs for years, and am
prepared to test and double-check any changes Julian makes.
