I tried that years ago but came to the conclusion that install with
copy often is you friend. This works as a firewall for strange
compilation errors in the packages. If you symlink a bad package can
spoil your day by making the package tree unusable. Sometime a make
distclean is needed and you lost your packages again for some
hours. etc. YMMW of course.
