Well, after playing around with Xft some more and reading the info
about it, I've made the xft build my default xemacs. It works quite
nicely so far, and the fonts look quite good. The info file was very
helpful in getting things setup, especially the part about using
set-face-font to set the default font. Made it easy to try out
different fonts and sizes.
The known issues about bleeding text and underlines is a little
annoying. The underline issue is especially annoying in the
minibuffer because I can't see the underline. It looks like a space.
Despite this, I like it.
Now for a few questions. I've been trying to add various different
languages using the Xft info. I have Korean, Japanese, and Chinese
working more or less, based on the HELLO page. (No, I can't really
read any of that, but it sure is cool!) I'm trying to get the rest of
the HELLO page to work.
With a non-xft build, the HELLO page just basically works (except for
Amharic and Arabic because I don't have those fonts). To make
progress, I think I need to know what xemacs is doing to find the
fonts for the various languages. In particular, Thai is not working,
but I'm pretty sure I have Thai fonts. I also have Arabic fonts, but
I can't get that to work either.
Any hints on how to figure out what xemacs is doing to select fonts in
the non-xft build?
Thanks,
Ray
