Perhaps there are still performance problems, but machines are way

Most machines are faster, but some of us still run on embedded systems
and/or VMs with limited CPU. 950Mhz anyone? So performance should
always be a consideration.
In 2000 or 2001 I stopped using XEmacs 21.5 (wow.... has 21.5
been around that long?) because a patch killed performance on the
netwinder. I was told to "get a faster machine". Not really a viable
solution when the netwinder is my bread and butter :(
That said, I thought mule was already the default. All of my build
scripts include "--without-mule" so making mule the default would not
affect me.
So in conclusion: if performance is a requirement you are probably not
running 21.5 anyway. So I think mule as a default would be fine.
However I just tried xft again and it still leaves lines all over the
screen. Not really ready for prime time.
Cheers,
Sean
