The -z combreloc stuff needs to be completely redone, with this much
variation the simple approach probably just doesn't cut it, and the
athena sensing is addressed by a separate patch by Jan Vroonhof.

Arrgh. Your -z combreloc patch is not going to work if ld is called
explicitly instead of gcc, right? Have you tested this on other
platforms (at least i386-linux)?
I guess I'm going to have to make that autoconf test platform- (and
version-) specific after all.

It's turned off intentionally, because it gets detected when people
don't want it, too. The widget detection stuff probably needs a
thorough rethink.
I'll probably apply Jan's patch for this.
