Hello
The modline of a elisp file in my configuration looks like:

Sorry, for the premature mail, I digged around and found
some old code
which does almost what I want:
(setq default-mode-line-format
(list
"-"
'(line-number-mode "L%l--")
'(column-number-mode "C%c--")
"%n"
'(-3 . "%p")
'mode-line-mule-info
'mode-line-modified
" "
'global-mode-string
" %[("
'mode-name
'mode-line-process
'minor-mode-alist
")%]--"
"-%-"))
(setq mode-line-format default-mode-line-format)
What id don't now is how to indicate the buffer encoding
since mode-line-mule-info is a GNU emacs variable. What is
the corresponding one in Xemacs?
