If I didn't do anything, and just loaded a .tex file, then things were
font-locked nicely, but pressing tab would just insert a tab.
If I said "(require 'latex)" or "(require 'tex) (require
'latex)", then I
would get: "Symbol's value as variable is void: TeX-auto-global"
If all else fails, you could read the instructions/manual coming with
the version of AUCTeX you are using. Also
M-x list-load-path-shadows RET
might help.
