IMHO, there are just too many regular expressions in the default and
they are far too general (i.e. if more of them started with ^, it
should reduce the problem). I think it is a case of the straw that broke
the camels back.
We either have to reduce the default, increase the regular expression
depth, fix the regular expressions (possibly breaking an obscure
compiler) or just live with it.
But setting `compilation-error-regexp-systems-list' only for what you
need is a good solution. I have had it set for years since it makes
a huge difference on slow machines. But even on a fairly fast
machine, when I went back to the default, I noticed a slowdown.
But you don't have to go too far... setting '(comma gnu python perl),
for example, should be just fine.
