Probably when editing this in Emacs it'll appear more legible, but
think of diffs against it...

sure. as long as it gets the same semantics.
you could write a lisp program to take the iso2022 chars and spit out numbers.
if you could, it would be great if you could convert at least some of the other
languages in there as well.
