Thanks for the report, Giacomo. This is a bug tickled by some code I introduced to make sure the modeline face reflects the default face on device creation, if the modeline face has not otherwise been specified; the place to fix it is in #'specifier-instance or at a lower level, #'specifier-instance is documented to return DEFAULT (defaulting to nil) if it can’t instantiate a specifier in a given domain, it erroring is a bug.
