Many years ago in grad school, I tried switching to dvorak. At the
time I had a keyboard that had a switch, so switching was easy. I
spent a weekend learning it and I think I got pretty good at it. Not
as good as qwerty, but decent.

That was exactly the problem. After the weekend, I went back to
school and started using the school computers. I couldn't type at all
anymore! After that experience, I pretty much gave up on any
non-qwerty input method.
I even keep my xemacs customizations of the standard keys to minimum,
in case I ever get stuck using an emacs without my inits. I think the
only standard key customization I do is make C-s be incremental regexp
search. Everything else is standard or on some other custom keymap.
