In then meantime, I recompiled xemacs with option
"--with-sound=native,nonas,noesd", and the problem has disappeared.
Seems that configure thinks that esd-sound is working while it isn't.
With native sound, all those funny default-sounds are working nicely (on
a PowerMac 6400, LinuxPPC).
