AFAIK, GTK v2/v3 require Pango. It doesn't replace Mule or faces,
however; it just does a reasonable job of putting Unicode on the
screen. I haven't checked to see if it can DTRT in the face of nasty
stuff (mixed Chinese and Japanese in the same buffer, for example).
