I have made some "research" some time ago - the time I first used
mmm-mode, i.e. before it was an xemacs-package.
As far as I can recall it: if the mail get's fontified - not in the
composing window -, the attachment doesn't get processed.
I think this is the result of having mmm-global-mode set to 't (enable
in all modes) instead of something like 'maybe (enable only in modes
that have associated submode classes).
