can Xft support be choosen at runtime?

No. I've done some work to make that possible, but unfortunately the
original contributed code assumes that you want Xft, and so you can
feed it an XLFD and it will return an Xft font. I don't know how much
work remains to make it actually possible; it's pretty complex.
