I think you might meant binary instead of source here. In either case, the
easiest route for a first-time user is what we should supply. I have decades of
building tools from scratch behind me and that's where I wanted to stay. I just
want to make it go. The hassle I went through building it on cygwin was annoying
and almost enough to keep me from using it. In fact when I reinstalled cygwin
recently, I just grabbed the easiest to get binary image because it did what I
needed to. I didn't have to think about it and I could focus on my task at hand
(which wasn't installing cygwin)

XEmacs has a nice package management system. Few non-OS programs have
anything nearly as easy to use. I found it kind of amusing that xemacs'
package management system wouldn't work without first circumventing the
manager to install its dependencies. That almost obviates the ease of use
advantage that xemacs gets from the package management system.
I have yet to make a package manager work. I'm sure it is very nice but the user
interface and configurability for a novice user is rather unpleasant.
