You have gnus installed?
yes
what's in /home/rendhalver/.xemacs/elisp/gnus.el?
Move it out of the way, if possible.
did that
Is /usr/local/xemacs/beta/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/gnus/gnus
the latest gnus XEmacs package?
yes

I think you should uninstall
/usr/local/xemacs/beta/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/ps-print-nomule/ps-print.
It's superseded by
/usr/local/xemacs/beta/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/gnus/gnus
AFAIK.
will do
whats the "proper" way to do that ??
[snip]
Please load the .el version of patch-keywords.el manually (L in
dired).
did that and did M-p in a reply buffer and it inserted the keywords fine
i repeat patch-keywords works fine here now !!!
it looks like it was a rogue gnus.el file in my load path that was
causing all the problems
thanks for all the help everyone provided
i have learnt some more about XEmacs and thats all good :)
