So it does. Also, if I save the Customization of the modeline colors
back to their 20.4 defaults, the shadows get drawn correctly when the
initial screen gets painted. It's just that when changing the
modeline face the shadow doesn't track until you repaint.

Right, I turn off the modeline from lisp (not custom) and I have
definitely had to change my geometry. Note that XEmacs had bugs in
this area, where the specified geometry isn't honored when the
tool-and-menubars are turned off from lisp. It's just that now it's
farther off than it was before :-).

I've been migrating away from face settings in X resources lately,
mostly because I can't effectively copy my database to all the X
screens I work off of. Custom is a godsend here.
Personally, I'd like to see the modeline colors retain their 20.4
defaults, but given the ability to easily Customize them, I'd say I
wasn't adamant about that.
