You need to set some coding system to utf-8, possibly
`default-process-coding-system' or
`default-network-coding-system', to `(utf-8 . utf-8)'.
Thanks to gmail search functionality I found the solution in
a old email which Aidan sent to me.
The (ugly) workaround is to use
LC_CTYPE=es_ES.ISO8859-1 xemacs-21.5-b29
Then everything works fine
