As a casual user who tried the Windows beta, I'd also prefer to see
most paths in the UNIX format. XEmacs can convert these to /s to \s
in the lower level calls if needed.
On windoze, my emacs usage has been limited to fsf's version which
corrects slash direction. 99% of the time it seems like the right
thing to do, but it's annoyed me once or twice when I was killing and
yanking pathnames for use on a command line. In many situations,
command line pathnames can have slashes going either way, but in some
contexts forward slashes are treated as indication options and things
get confused.
Overall, I'd still lean toward correcting the slash order by default,
but it could annoy potential emacs converts that were unfortunate
enough to have started their computing experience without exposure to
a real operating system. Maybe this behavior should be tied to a user
preference variable.
