OK, if Emacs does it that way, it's a feature. I need to check some
boundary cases (integers which represent no character).
What do we do about Adrian's report that no-mule XEmacs does _not_ do
the mod 256 calculation, but signals an error? Is it a bug or a
feature? I vote, with Hrvoje, "feature", implying I fix the doc for
that too.
I'll do the write-up.
