 I think you'll find this easier to debug yourself.  It's pretty easy
 to simulate.

I get "Sending...failed: 1" in the minibuffer.  I tried Kai's original
patch, and I tried the following (which I suggest is applied) against
the Gnus XEmacs package.  Both worked as expected.
