That seems unlikely, our ispell.el doesn’t have an
#'ispell-insert-word
function at all.
You are right, I did not pay enough attention, when starting
xemacs -vanilla indeed the ispell used is
/usr/share/xemacs21/xemacs-packages/lisp/ispell/ispell.elc
however when starting xemacs regularly then
/usr/share/xemacs21/site-lisp/dictionaries-common/ispell.elc
is used where
ispell.el is a link to
/usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/dictionaries-common/ispell.el
Which has the problem I described. Alas too many ispell.els are around,
one ispell.el to rule them all. [1]
Removing the link solved my problem but I think I will anyhow write the
pkg manager that he/she will upgrade for 8.04.

[1] that is the thing I find a little disturbing with debian/ubuntu very
often they have their versions of the packages which may or may not
be working.
