I think Ben also looked into it (didn't he even post a patch ?).
There were some discussions on emacs-devel recently on syncing with
GNU libc's regexp stuff.
This is long term. From what I hear, this GNU libc stuff is hot, but
it will take some work to add the necessary support for Emacs (i.e.
support for \sX, \cX, Mule, non-contiguous text, and maybe more).
Reducing the number of slightly different
regexp implementations in the GNU world would be a good idea...
