21.4.10-mule codings problem, ~ appears

Hello After years I tried again using Mule, since this way I can even read math symbols in mails, using the x-symbol package. However there is a annoying feature a latex buffer gets during the save-buffers-kill-emacs operation corrupted in such a way that all greek symbols like \alpha are then replaced by ~. According to Christoph in GNU emacs there is something like "safe encoding" a feature which is missing here. What can I do, it is really that I lose results of my editing. Thanks Uwe Brauer PS, I noticed then when compiled with--mule=yes there now no longer appears a Mule Entry in the tool bar, why?
