No both return '[No match]'.
Again, works for me.

> (setq column-number-mode t)
> (setq line-number-mode t)
These lines should just have the same effect as the function calls
above. (As it turns out, these modes *are* modes that you can enable
by setting the mode variables, so either pair of lines should work.)
I don't see anything in your init file that should interfere with
line/column number display.
Did you build XEmacs yourself, or are you using a package from your OS
distribution?
What are the values of `modeline-format' and
`modeline-position-status'?
