set-charset-registry doesn't work?

For my build of 21.2.13,
(set-charset-registry 'ascii "JISX0201")
reutuns nil and has no effect. The desired effect
is to force use of JISX0201 based font instead of
the pure ASCII font to render ASCII characters so
that the Kanji characters are displayed in the exact
twice as wide as the ASCII characters.
Has set-charset-registry been made obsolete? Or
this is just a problem specific to my build?
