There’s no direct equivalent, and the API is not worth emulating.

work in XEmacs then is...

similar. I would probably have suggested some code myself, but I don’t
know where to find the Gnus code you’re modifying.
The code I am talking about is lisp/gnus-html.el in Gnus git:
