FWIW, I see this from time to time as well. I've also noted a
connection with doing C-x 5 2 prior to the `read-passwd'. I have a
feeling that whatever X11 commands are invoked when `read-passwd' is
called end up being applied to the other frame and not the one where
the password is being read. But I can't reproduce it either, so this
is just an <aol>me too</aol>.
