I think you need to apply some patches from Andy to actually see them.
Don't know if they're in the CVS sources or not (don't have CVS
access).
They are. You get the (top) gutter automatically from a rather recent
CVS version. One day, I had to set-specifier the gutter visibility to nil
myself after CVS updating.
