I did set `gutter-visible-p' to nil, to no avail. Of course, as I
know now, customize does something else when I do that, but I don't
use customize. The documentation should probably say:
"Don't set this variable directly; use customize."
or something. So, is actually
(set-specifier default-gutter-visible-p val)
the PC way to turn the gutter off when I don't use customize?
