Maybe so, but upgrading Gnus does not change sendmail.el, as
sendmail.el is not part of Gnus. And a change in sendmail.el will not
help Gnus, as Gnus uses message.el, instead.
So, did you upgrade sendmail.el, as well?
The Emacs 21.3 pretest appears to have a working sendmail.el; at least
it looks at the exit status of sendmail...
