I'm not sure that's really needed, or that's really a problem if you
prefer. Portability will always imply handling the different event loops
differently on the different platforms.
A more important problem we have IMHO is the availability of
non-portable (system-specific) ways to customize the editor. I think we
should first (and non backward-compatibly) get rid of X resources and
stuff like that altogether, and force the users to customize via Lisp
only. This also implies having a customization layer sufficiently
abstracted in lisp to satisfy the needs (hint: Xft, custom, face
inheritance etc... how well does that mix currently ?).
