I don't see the warnings at all. The tarball unpacks fine here.

It's due to some Makefile hackery I used to put some files in
./man/x-symbol/ that don't normally get put into that directory in
other packages.
I confirm the strange messages while untaring under
Suse Linux 7.2 with tar (GNU tar) 1.13.18
Worse, the package does not work well, however when I install
Christoph's latest package in ~/.xemacs/xemacs-packages
everything is fine.
