Another day, another XEmacs beta hits the streets!
XEmacs 21.5.9 "brussels sprouts" is released.
This release introduces the new GC algorithms that you've probably
heard all about. If you want to use them you have to explicitly
enable the feature with the '--use-kkcc' configure option.
We've got Michael Sperber to thank for the new GC, so I'm sure he'd
appreciate any "kkcc" related feedback (just send it to
<mailto:xemacs-beta＠xemacs.org>).
There is also the usual round of bug fixes. And this time I have also
included an MD5 checksum in 'xemacs-21.5.9.tar.gz.md5'.
The tarball is at C-x C-f /ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/beta/ RET. Go
grab it and don't forget to send us your build reports
(M-x build-report RET).

First we added a dumpable flag to lrecord_implementation. It shows,
if the object is dumpable and should be processed by the dumper.
* lrecord.h (struct lrecord_implementation): added dumpable flag
(MAKE_LRECORD_IMPLEMENTATION): fitted the different makro definitions
to the new lrecord_implementation and their calls.
Then we changed mark_object, that it no longer needs a mark method for
those types that have pdump descritions.
* alloc.c:
(mark_object): If the object has a description, the new mark algorithm
is called, and the object is marked according to its description.
Otherwise it uses the mark method like before.
These procedures mark objects according to their descriptions. They
are modeled on the corresponding pdumper procedures.

To write a pdump description for Lisp_Event, we converted every struct
in the union event to a Lisp_Object. So we created nine new
Lisp_Objects: Lisp_Key_Data, Lisp_Button_Data, Lisp_Motion_Data,
Lisp_Process_Data, Lisp_Timeout_Data, Lisp_Eval_Data,
Lisp_Misc_User_Data, Lisp_Magic_Data, Lisp_Magic_Eval_Data.
We also wrote makro selectors and mutators for the fields of the new
designed Lisp_Event and added everywhere these new abstractions.
We implemented XD_UNION support in (mark_with_description), so
we can describe exspecially console/device specific data with XD_UNION.
To describe with XD_UNION, we added a field to these objects, which
holds the variant type of the object. This field is initialized in
the appendant constructor. The variant is an integer, it has also to
be described in an description, if XD_UNION is used.

The original XEmacs 21.4.9 (Windows) had a problem which resulted from a bad
merge from vanilla XEmacs 21.4.9. This resulted in font-lock displaying
weird configurations of the progress guage. Also the website did not reflect
the new version, nor the CHANGES file. Both problems have now been fixed and
the version updated to 21.4.9-1. The original announcement follows.
* XEmacs 21.4.9 "Informed Management (Windows)" is released.
"Informed Management" is the ninth in the OXYMORON series.
XEmacs 21.4.9 "Informed Management (Windows)" is the fifth in a series of
MS-Windows focused releases of XEmacs. The intent of this release
series is to provide source and binary distributions of the XEmacs
21.4.x series with any additional fixes or enhancements necessary to
provide a pleasurable editing experience on the MS-Windows platform.
Source is available via cvs at cvs.xemacs.org. This release has the
release tag r21-4-9-windows and the most current snapshot will always
have the branch tag windows-21-4.
The binaries for both cygwin and native MS-Windows are available via
the XEmacs netinstaller which can be found at
http://www.xemacs.org/Download/win32/setup.exe This version of the
installer is 1.2.2.11.2.11.

"Informed Management" is the ninth in the OXYMORON series.
XEmacs 21.4.9 "Informed Management (Windows)" is the fifth in a series of
MS-Windows focused releases of XEmacs. The intent of this release
series is to provide source and binary distributions of the XEmacs
21.4.x series with any additional fixes or enhancements necessary to
provide a pleasurable editing experience on the MS-Windows platform.
Source is available via cvs at cvs.xemacs.org. This release has the
release tag r21-4-9-windows and the most current snapshot will always
have the branch tag windows-21-4.
The binaries for both cygwin and native MS-Windows are available via
the XEmacs netinstaller which can be found at
http://www.xemacs.org/Download/win32/setup.exe This version of the
installer is 1.2.2.11.2.11.

"Informed Management" is the tenth in the OXYMORON series.
Relative to XEmacs 21.4.8 "Honest Recruiter", "Informed Management"
contains a number of crash fixes, including fixes for Motif crashing
while updating non-labels, crashes when MS Windows returns bogus
times, in handling of dead consoles, in subprocess handling, in
skip-chars, and on finding non-existent a XML file. This last fix may
prevent the infamous "gnus-byte-compile" crashes, as well.
A recent update to Lesstif on Linux may have introduced a new crash.
Only Lesstif version 0.93.36 on Debian "unstable" is known to be
affected, and the bug appears to be in Lesstif. Other platforms and
Motif implementations by other vendors are apparently safe.
There are many important fixes to redisplay in Windows, including for
the "freeze under virtual window manager" bug.
There is an important fix to keyboard handling under X, which makes use
of keysym-based input methods such as ru-keys.el much more comfortable.

The first release in this series, XEmacs 21.4.0 "Solid Vapor",
contained a large number of improvements and extensions to the current

* XEmacs 21.4.9 is "gamma" software.
The usual "no warranty" disclaimer (see etc/WARRANTY, sections 10 and
11) applies. However, we are now experimenting with a level of
stability intermediate between "beta" and "stable", dubbed "gamma".
At this point all the developers and our beta testers trust the 21.4
code base with all their editing needs. Many have found it
sufficiently stable that they've moved on to the development branch
again in search of some excitement.
After several months of testing, XEmacs 21.4.9 has been shown
sufficiently stable to be recommended to all users. However, there
still remain a few outstanding problems that must be fixed before we
retire 21.1.

Windows branch and installers:
The Windows branch continues to have a few changes not yet included in
the mainline. It is preferred to the mainline for Windows users.

requests.
If you haven't used XEmacs CVS recently, we moved the repository
before the 21.4.6 release. The repository structure is the same as
before, so it should be possible to reuse an existing checked-out CVS
tree.
Take care that your Root is set correctly to
CVSROOT=:pserver:cvs＠cvs.xemacs.org:/pack/xemacscvs
On platforms with a Bourne shell and find available, something like

will convert your entire tree.
Tags are also the same; to update to release 21.4.9, use the release
tag "r21-4-9". To set a sticky tag which will always update to the
current release, use the branch tag "release-21-4".

w.r.t. hscroll/truncation/continuation glyphs causing jumping up
and down of the lines, since they're bigger than the line
size. (It was seen most obviously when there's a horizontal scroll
bar, e.g. do C-h a glyph or something like that.) The problem was
that the glyph-contrib-p setting on glyphs was ignored even if it
was set properly, which it wasn't until now.

1) Download the packages that you want to install from: [1]
/ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/packages/
2) Unpack them to: [2]
/usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/
3) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.[245].x):
----------------------------------------------
1) Tools -> Packages -> Add Download Site -> choose site
2) Tools -> Packages -> List and Install
3) Select the packages you wish to install (there are brief
instructions at the bottom of the packages buffer).
4) Packages -> Install/Remove Selected
5) Re-start XEmacs.
Using XEmacs Package Tools (XEmacs 21.1.14):
