APPROVE COMMIT It turns out that there is a simple work around for the problems with 'config.status --recheck' under autoconf 2.60 and 2.61. By default the autoconf variable ac_configure_args contains a leading space, but we strip this off via a call to XE_SPACE. The solution is to restore the space.
