I've given Daniel access to the main tree.
Daniel, it is strongly recommended to use an anonymous checkout for
any workspace but Xft. This avoids spurious commits to the mainline,
while if you have the separate workspace for Xft, it will have a
sticky tag in it, so commits will go to the right branch. Note that
you _can_ commit to the mainline now, but according to procedure you
must get an approval from the review board by submitting to
xemacs-patches first. If that becomes inconvenient, you can request
admission to the review board (which involves a certain amount of work
in return, of course).
There's no reason not to submit patches _for the mainline_ using cvs
diff _on the branch_, but you should check that they actually apply to
the mainline, and mention any fuzz or offsets in the post to
xemacs-patches. With Didier's Patcher (patcher.el in the xemacs-devel
pacakges), it's no more effort (measured in keystrokes) to make a
patch against the mainline after applying, and it's cleaner. But
that's up to you.
