For one, because compatibility is really ugly.
But the real reason for introducing a new function would be to allow
extension to new OS functionality in a consistent and backward-
compatible way.
 If we introduced a new API it must be because it will make it so
much
 better to program against that so that elispers will use that instead
 of the compatible API or? Likely in this case, I don't think so. 
That's a good argument for abandoning XEmacs entirely, you know.
Except I don't think it's good enough, in either case. :-)
