There is still a way to have whitespace-global-mode autoloaded, here's for example how a similar situation it has been taken care of in diff- mode.el: ;; XEmacs hack: autoload a dummy autoload instead of a minor mode ;;;###autoload(autoload 'diff-minor-mode "diff-mode" nil t) (define-minor-mode diff-minor-mode [...] Perhaps this would be "safer" in whitespace-mode.el too?
