Uh, do you mind if I say "yuck!"? Is this platform dependency really
necessary? Can't we add the relevant attributes with appropriate
values to the null font instance for mswindows?

We don’t trust the Windows fonts to know if they’re proportional or not. So,
no.
(Yes, I know this whole file is already platform-dependent, but it
would be nice to reuse as many patterns as possible.)
